East Sussex National
pic
Completed in 1990, this purpose built four star hotel has everything needed for a great relaxing golf break. With its two 18 hole golf courses and academy course, together with 12 undercover driving bays and up to 40 grass bays and of course the hotel, what else could you want. But it has more, it also has 2 golf pro’s on site (one man, one woman) and a 3 hole academy course consisting of a par 4, 3 and 5. There is also separate indoor teaching bays, and video swing analysis centre. The site would make an excellent venue for a tuition break or for a short golf break-there is plenty to do for the visiting golfer. The whole venue shouts quality in vast quantities. It isn’t ostentatious. The hotel rooms are spacious and lend to be either twin or double rooms, the en-suite bathroom is clean, light and airy, it consists of a separate bath and shower and a good sized sink, set in a neutrally decorated spacious bathroom.
Electric trolley batteries are taken from you at the end of the round for re-charging overnight, ready for your next game. This small but extremely helpful service is further expanded to include a free clean of the golf clubs after play, they are then stored over- night in a secure bag store. No clambering around with heavy bags and batteries at this venue
The hotel boasts 104 bedrooms, 3 restaurants (one in the clubhouse) and a host of function suits of varying sizes, it also offers leisure membership, which is free of charge to the hotel guests. The purpose built pro shop is a good sized and well equipped with Daily, Green Lamb and Calvin Klein clothing as well as the usual tees/balls etc.
The food on the a la carte menu offered a good variety of choices and was very tasty. Whilst it came out in ‘designer dinner’ size, it was deceptive as there was plenty to eat. Breakfast was a self-service buffet with plenty on offer, all fresh, cooked well and tasting good.

The Oxfordshire
pic
With the Chiltern Hills in view this exceptional four star 50 bedroom hotel of only a few years old is the place to visit. The hotel building is spacious without being over dominating, its luxurious without being overpowering. Looking from the balcony down the ninth fairway doesn’t give the true perspective of the golf course, its actually looks pretty easy and you begin to wonder what all the fuss is about. Being compared with an inland links course due its links style grass and severe undulations, you can understand why as you view it from afar. But don’t be fooled, this is a true test for even the best of golfers. You can’t always get a fantastic hotel and golf course in one neat bundle, but you can at The Oxfordshire.

Bowood Hotel Spa & Golf Resort
pic
Set amidst the beautiful setting of Bowood House, the golf course does nothing to indicate its relatively recent arrival to this great estate. The golf course opened in 1992. The grounds for Bowood House have the true signature of Capability Brown, and the course compliments its gentile surroundings as designed by Dave Thomas, designer of the Belfy .
With the golf course, each hole brings it’s own challenge, each tee shot requires some degree of thought, and each bunker appears to be strategically placed to catch the drive of reasonably long hitting ladies. That said the bunkers are a pleasure to play, you don’t sink into them as it trying to get out of quick sand, equally you don’t feel as though sand was the last thing on the wish list for the green keepers

Luton Hoo
pic
‘Hoo’ is a Saxon word meaning ‘spur of the hill’. With so much on offer at Luton Hoo Golf & Spa, its difficult to know where to start. The on-site five star hotel oozes luxury. Its historic records show a mountain of history which leads it to its current state, but more recent history is equally interesting. There is so much to see and do, with its on-site leisure and spa facilities, restaurants, tennis courts and of course, the golf course. There are three areas to stay, the Mansion House, the Parklands and the Flower Gardens. The Mansion house décor surpasses every expectation possible, it is absolutely stunning, from the large quirky rooms filled with furniture appropriate to the design and stature of the building. From the huge windows dressed with lavish curtains to the separate bath and shower in the voluptuous bathrooms this place has it all. The Flower Garden rooms, located near Adams Brassiere, whilst marginally lack the grandeur of the Mansion House, have been decorated with the same theme in mind. This has been done exceptionally well and a stay in the Flower Garden rooms will equally delight. With the added convenience for eating at Adams Brassiere and access to leisure and spa facilities, which are all within walking distance. Transport from the Mansion House to Adams Brassiere is via an onsite Luton Hoo London taxi’s, which are foc
The golf course is relatively new, and is very long at 6143 off the reds. There is a clear difference between the two ‘sides’ of the golf course, with the holes closer to the building being more established parkland than the newer holes ‘at the back’. Bizarrely, there are no bunkers on this golf course (due to its heritage), but that doesn’t make it an easy golf course to play, it has other things to think about instead. It isn’t particularly hilly, there are a few holes that have hills, but it’s the length of the course that could catch you out. Where there are no bunkers, there might be water in play or long grass to negotiate. It’s a good test for the club golfer. Holes 1, 9, 10 and 18 have a similar feel to them, established trees line the fairway, and hole number one is actually SI1.

St Pierre Hotel & Country Club
pic
A site that offers two 18 hole golf courses in the Old Course and the Mathern Course, it lends itself to a golf break. We haven’t assessed the Mathern Course, or played it for some years, so it would be unfair to feedback on this course, however, the Old Course has been played and assessed as follows.
This is a good all round course, which whilst it isn’t a woodland course, has some lovely large old trees (usually in play!) It has water on the course and the famous 18th par three over the 11 acre lake is a good challenge. This is a tough hole insofar as it is OOB on the left and has two bunkers guarding the green. In fact water comes into play on a number of the closing holes, tucked in at the back of some greens-hiding.
You could think that a ‘chain’ four star hotel might lack some of the personal charm, but the welcoming staff more than make up for any shortcomings.
